To spotlight the people the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas helps, check out our weekly blog called, “An Inside Look.” This week, read about Dr. Morgan and all she’s down to help the Foundation and our patients in Uvalde.

Gearing Up for Uvalde

Clinic staff, Olga Tristan, MA and Laura Jaramillo, MA, packed their purple clinic suitcases yesterday with laptops, blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes, prescription pads, and charts. Now, they are in Uvalde with Social Services Coordinator Kathy Kraemer and our wonderful Dr. Lola Morgan, seeing patients for our seizure clinic.

I saw Olga preparing and asked her about her upcoming visit. “I’m always excited to go and talk to our patients,” Olga told me. “I love hearing how they have improved with Dr. Morgan’s care.”  Laura agreed, adding, “I love to travel with Dr. Morgan because she is so kind and really cares about her patients.”

The Wonderful Dr. Morgan

Dr. Morgan specializes in Neurology, Neurophysiology, and Epilepsy, practicing at the Medical Arts & Research Center (MARC), as a part of UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Morgan has been traveling to Uvalde with the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas for the last 12 years, providing care to uninsured people with epilepsy and their caregivers who have limited ability to travel.

Dr. Morgan sees about 20 patients each clinic. Patients travel from 19 different counties to see her because the options for care are so limited in more remote parts of Texas. Patients are screened by EFCST staff to ensure they qualify for no other type of care and to confirm they should be seen by an epilepsy specialist; patients of any age are seen at EFCST’s clinics.

Dr. Morgan has a reputation for patience and achieving results. She’s thorough, helpful, and cares about her patients.

Providing the Utmost Care

“Dr. Morgan asked me to join them on their quarterly trips to Uvalde for clinic and I saw for myself how happy the patients were to see Dr. Morgan and our staff,” Kathy explained. “When I met with each patient and their families, they all told me about how Dr. Morgan has helped them control their seizures and that she always takes her time and listens.”

Not only is Dr. Morgan concerned about her patients’ epilepsy, but she’s also concerned about their other needs as well. “The reason Dr. Morgan asked Kathy to go to clinic with them is to make sure the patients are getting all the medical and other help they should be receiving,” Kim Martin, assistant director, said. “She wants to make sure that yes, they are managing their epilepsy, but also that they’re able to manage their lives, and lead their lives independently, despite their diagnosis.”

Feeling Grateful

Dr. Morgan said, “I am amazed and grateful by the support the team provides to people living with epilepsy. I am pleased to see patients and have clinic in Uvalde. Thanks to all of the wonderful nurses and staff, including Christine, Olga, Linda, and Kathy for their fine work!”

Dr. Morgan provides our patients with excellent and attentive care. For her dedication and compassion, we all thank her!
