Esteban was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was three years old. Before being diagnosed and connecting with the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas, he and his family didn’t know much about epilepsy. They didn’t know how to explain Esteban’s disorder to other family members. They started learning, doing the epilepsy walks, and taking advantage of programs such as Camp Brainstorm and Studio E.

Esteban’s mom, Helen, shows her epilepsy spirit where she works, and the staff joins in. Everyone in the family has seizure first aid posters hanging in their home. Studio E helped Esteban talk about his feelings, give him courage, and understand that he’s not alone. At first he was shy and tentative, but he grew more comfortable and participated. Camp Brainstorm provided a safe and fun experience away from home for him. Helen expressed how thankful she was that a staff member sent her photos of Esteban the first night, to show her he was doing well.

Esteban’s family has been doing our epilepsy walks for over five years. “We do them to show my son he’s not alone. We support him no matter what. Sometimes he tells me he’s sorry. I say, don’t ever give up. Because of you, I keep learning. I’m becoming a better person. You brought our family closer. Don’t ever feel bad.”
