My name is Jessica Rosales. Yes, I have the same last name as the CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation Central & South Texas – she’s my momma! I was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy at age 11. My mom started the Foundation to help families like ours, who didn’t have anywhere else to turn.
I always hear, “We exist because of you.” While that may be true, what my mom and her staff do on a daily basis to help people with epilepsy is way bigger than I am!
The kind of services and support the Foundation provides weren’t available when I was diagnosed. I no longer suffer from seizures, but I do live the life of a person with significant disabilities and limitations after my life-saving brain surgery.
A couple months ago, I was asked by Jessica Strom, the Program Manager at the Foundation, if I would be interested in being the peer facilitator for a new program called PACES. After learning more about PACES and what it provides for adults with epilepsy, I gladly accepted.
I’ve always viewed my life as an open book. If what I went through, and what I continue to go through, can help someone else with epilepsy, I’m always willing to do my part. Sometimes being an individual who isn’t “the same” as everyone else is hard. So, it’s refreshing to meet people who are going through some of the same challenges.
Sharing stories, concerns, and frustrations is exactly what PACES is about!
What is PACES?
PACES is a new eight-week program for adults with epilepsy. During the course of the program, we cover a variety of topics relevant to adults with epilepsy. It’s like a mini-support group. People can also receive advice and resources on the best ways to manage their epilepsy. PACES is done over the phone, so it’s extremely accessible for people without reliable transportation.
Plus, PACES is completely confidential. Everything shared within our group stays within our group! You can share as much or as little as you feel like. If you are looking for a laid-back, friendly, nonjudgmental group of people to relate to, PACES is the place for you!
