Gabby Gamez: I really believe, firmly believe, that Studio E is creating an impact in the lives of every participant. Being able to be part of the Epilepsy Foundation, being able to be part of something that is working towards giving people living with epilepsy the opportunity to normalize their lives as best as possible, is a huge privilege for me because it speaks to me in that way. Professionally too, the combination of being able to: use my skills, my training, my experience, my expertise in childhood, and development, and growth and using art therapy in exposing people to art is very rewarding. So on both ends it’s almost like my heart is extremely full. So, I really believe that any person that’s been a participant for Studio E has left with an invisible toolbox where they are taking more confidence, they are taking friendships, they are taking more control and empowerment, they are taking the opportunity to have a voice, a stronger voice. During those two hours where they get to sit here, get to disconnect with everyone else and really just feel like themselves.
The San Antonio Studio E offers classes for ages 6-12 and for ages 13-20. Classes meet every Saturday, starting August 18th through September 29. Studio E offers group art sessions, allowing participants to explore their creativity, meet others with epilepsy and express themselves in an open, accepting and safe group setting. According to research, people living with epilepsy reported increased self-esteem after participating in Studio E. During the program, participants work with an art instructor using a variety of artistic media, including painting, sketching and sculpting. Because some things are easier to “say” through art, Studio E provides people impacted by epilepsy a unique opportunity to express themselves and open up about their experiences with the condition.
