Like the mighty T. Rex, we hope to make epilepsy EXTINCT! This sentiment was proudly displayed on the shirts of attendees at this month’s, July 17th, EFCST Family Day at the Witte Museum.
Family Day brought together families of all ages for a fun, educational, and carefree day. Youth from Camp Brainstorm 2021 got to reunite with cabinmates and counselors, while parents got to meet and discuss their children’s accomplishments. EFCST staff had the privilege of being introduced to the families and loved ones of our clinic and program participants, who we have gotten to hear about so often.
Four high respected pediatric and adult neurologists from San Antonio and Austin joined us for our Ask the Doc Q&A session:
Dr. Kate Labiner
Dr. Linda Leary
Dr. Kameel Karkar
Dr. Azreena Thomas
Visits to specialists don’t always leave time for every question to get asked, so this opportunity brought out important questions from the audience.
“If I have a seizure, do I have epilepsy?”
“Can I die from epilepsy? What is SUDEP?
“What does a visit to the EMU look like? Why would you go to an EMU?”
Events like EFCST’s Family Day are as important for people with epilepsy as they are for their loved ones. An epilepsy diagnosis can be scary and isolating. Meeting with other people who have gone through a similar experience can be healing – whether you have epilepsy or love someone with epilepsy. Peer support can be just as impactful on quality of life as something like antiseizure medications.
After learning about epilepsy, we set out with our new and old friends into the Witte Museum to learn about creatures from the tiny tardigrade to our mighty T. Rex. We hope to see you at EFCST’s next event!
